I love mocking street vendors!
A few months ago we were in the city and J went into the Chinatown Starbucks to use the bathroom. I stood out on Canal waiting for her for 10minutes at least, just watching the crowds shuffle by. When she came out, we started to cross the street and a tiny chinese woman selling bootleg videos came around the corner screaming:
"FIVE DOLLARS! FIVE DOLLARS! FIVE DOLLARS!"
Not a block or two later a guy had a plastic bag full of sheets of stiickers. He had cheesey rainbows, unicorns, hearts, puppies, and other second grade kind of crap. His speil was brilliant though:
"Get yer stickuz! Two sheets fera dollah! Stickuz! Get yer stickuz here!"
Somehow, I always get some sort of comedic material while walking the streets of the city.
When my band came up for CMJ in 2000, we were walking around the east village one evening and was approaching two older AA gentlemen sitting on a stoop. Right as we came up on them a minivan drove past blaring native american tribal music. At which the two men laughed and one exclaimed:
"DAMN! That pow-wow's got it going on!"
Fun stuff.
