risk management

There's a fine line between paranoia and awareness... but there's also
a fine line between awareness and complacency.

All week there have been people at Times Square handing out free
samples of packaged food to morning commuters.

Given the (completely justified) caution regarding unattended packages
and receiving mail from strangers right now, it seems like a bad time
to be handing out food and expecting people to trust it. I don't know
who's worse - the companies that are choosing now to do this, or the
people who are blindly taking these things. How do we really know
where this stuff comes from, or what's in it? Can we afford to be so
trusting in the wake of all this?

...and I can't do a thing with it!

The office migrated from Novell to NT today, but didn't transfer anyone's rights, so none of us can get into any of the programs we need to use. Fun!

One good thing to come out of this is that my computer has been deemed archaic by the IT department, and a new one is being ordered for me.

I may be much slower to respond to personal mail from work for the next couple days - I've had my telnet program uninstalled and I'm relying on WinTelnet, which is miserable. Normal service will be restored as soon as the replacement machine is in place.
